Antioxidants - your front row against ageing skin

You've probably heard the word "antioxidant" thrown around — usually attached to blueberries and overpriced superfood smoothies. Here's what nobody told you: the same thing that makes those foods worth eating is one of the most important ingredients you can put on your face. Think of it as the front row of your skincare routine — it does the hard, unglamorous graft up front so the rest of you gets the glory. And if you've started clocking a few more lines than you'd like in the mirror, this is the bit you'll want to read.

What are antioxidants, in plain terms?

Antioxidants are nutrients (vitamins and minerals) and enzymes that help your body prevent and repair damage to its own tissue. They do it by shutting down free radicals — unstable molecules that kick off a process called oxidation, which damages your cells. Left unchecked, that cell damage shows up as everything from premature ageing to, at the serious end, skin cancer.

You can get them two ways: on the inside, by eating the good stuff (dark green veg, nuts, blueberries, salmon, avo, sweet potato, green tea), and on the outside, applied directly to your skin in a product like a serum. Most blokes manage neither. You're about to fix that.

How do they actually work?

Picture free radicals as the opposition pack — driving at your skin every time you step into the sun, light a cigarette, or breathe in city pollution, all of them trying to get over your line. Antioxidants are the front row that holds them. They do it two ways: they speed up your skin's natural repair systems, and they directly shut down further damage before it gets through.

The heavy hitters in skincare are Vitamins A, C and E, plus resveratrol and the mineral selenium. Vitamins A and C pull double duty — on top of neutralising free radicals, they encourage cell and tissue growth, helping your skin actively rebuild itself rather than just hold the line.

The connection to skin cancer — straight talk

Here's the serious part. When you're in the sun, your skin absorbs UV light (both UVA and UVB). Too much of it damages the DNA inside your skin cells. Let enough of that damage stack up over the years and cells can start growing abnormally — which is how skin cancer begins. Antioxidants help by finding and repairing that DNA damage before it builds.

Two things we won't sugarcoat:

One. A topical antioxidant does not cancel your skin cancer risk. It's one player in your defence, not the whole team.

Two. It's the first half of the job. The other half — the bigger half — is sun protection. Antioxidants and SPF pack down together: one repairs and fortifies, the other stops the damage from happening in the first place. You don't send out half a front row. You need both.

And for the man watching his face age in real time

Free radicals don't just mess with your DNA. They also break down elastin and collagen — the two proteins that keep your skin firm, tight and looking like it belongs to a younger man. That framework naturally weakens with age anyway; sun, smoking and pollution just hit fast-forward on the whole thing, and the result is wrinkles and sagging.

Antioxidants slow that slide by neutralising the free radicals attacking those proteins — holding the scrum steady while age tries to shove you backwards. In plain English: they help your skin hold onto its firmness for longer. If you're starting to feel like your face is getting ahead of you, this is one of the most effective things you can do about it — quietly, daily, no fuss.

Where do they fit in your routine?

Easy. A serum is the most effective way to get antioxidants onto your skin — the concentration is higher than in a moisturiser, so it actually does the job. It goes on first, under your day cream and under your sunscreen, especially on days you'll be spending time outdoors. First man into the ruck, every morning.

This is where we come in...

Here's the thing about antioxidants: they only work if the formulation is right — the correct ingredients, at the correct concentrations, that stay stable in the bottle. Get that wrong and you've got an expensive placebo. We've done that homework for you.

Our Serum is built around a Vitamin C derivative — a proper antioxidant working to fight free-radical damage and support your skin's repair. And because antioxidants and sun protection pack down together, our SPF Moisturiser is enriched with antioxidants too, so both halves of your defence are on the field without you having to think about it. The science is sorted. You just have to use it.
